Hey everyone,

I’m starting my first serious indoor garden experiment and would love some advice from people who’ve done this longer than I have.

Right now I’ve planted:

  • Radishes (Cherry Belle + Crimson Giant)
  • Lettuce
  • Cantaloupe
  • Chives / garlic
  • Chamomile

I’m growing them indoors in seed-starting soil and experimenting with a modular hexagonal container system I built. It’s something I’ve been developing as a propagation setup, and I’m using this first round as a real-world stress test.

So far I’m seeing germination in the radishes, lettuce, chamomile, and garlic after just 7 days, which is encouraging.

A few questions:

  1. What are the pro tips for indoor gardens?
  2. What are the biggest mistakes?
  3. How important is a heated base & airflow at this stage?
  4. Is the cantaloupe unrealistic indoors? Haha
  5. What lighting/grow lights/ light schedule do you find works?
  6. Any soil or nutrient recommendations once seedlings establish?
  7. I transplanted the radishes and they started to lay down. After watering them they perked right up. This morning they were down again and some water perked them up. Any knowledge here?

I’m genuinely trying to learn what works and what doesn’t before scaling anything further. Feel free to take a look at the system here:

Appreciate any insights.

Check out “Indoor Edible Gardens” by Zia Allaway and “Kitchen Gardening for Beginners” by Simon Akeroyd. I found them both to be very helpful for growing fruits/veg/herbs indoors. Try seeing if they are available at your local libraries :)!

You’re gonna need a bigger pot

I would highly suggest investing in some perlite to incorporate into your soil

Where’d you get those pots? I kinda like them.

You should grow your own Settlers of Catan board.
